Materials List for Arts of the World Online

Welcome to Arts of the World!

The art materials list for this course is a bit lengthy, so you will want to plan ahead and order your materials now.

Also, there is a small stock of art supplies available in the Online Learning Computer Lab. Please use these only if you are unable to purchase your own materials and please leave them in good condition for the classes to come. If you use any of the online learning materials up, please notify me so that I can plan for next semester and purchase more.

Art Materials List

This course will require the use of a variety of art materials to complete the assignments. Many of the course objectives are directly related to a specific medium.

Important Notes:

  • These materials do not have to be new. You may have many of them already in your home which could save money and time.

  • You may use any source of your choice to purchase these materials. For unique items that may need an explanation or clarity, a link has been added from a specific store. This does not mean, however, that you must purchase from this store.

  • No student will be denied participation in this course based on ability to purchase supplies. Please email your instructor if you have questions about this issue or any of the materials listed below with in the first two weeks of the semester so that we may devise a plan.

Please order or obtain the following materials by the end of the first week of the course:

1 sketchbook - 9" x 12", 50 or more pages, white paper, spiral bound (you may not use lined notebook paper)

1. The Art of Islam: Abstract Patterns Project:

1 pencil with eraser

1 ball point pen

1 pair of scissors

Masking tape

1 12” ruler

stencils (circle, square, ellipse, oval) or French curves (you can also free hand these)

1 sheet of 18" x 24" white tag board

3 sheets of 9” x 12” graph paper (you can also draw your own grid)

2. The Art of Europe: Illustrated Medieval Manuscripts Project:

1 pencil with eraser

watercolor paper size 8 x 10 in

3. The Art of Africa: Creative Clay Mask Project:

OR

Canvas or other scrap fabric to cover work space so clay doesn't stick to the table

Rolling pin

Plastic Zip-loc bags

Jute, assorted yarn, assorted beads, gems, natural stones, shells, raffia, horsehair, natural seed pods, and other nature things...moss, feathers, etc - Be creative!

or glue gun

4. Aboriginal Dream Painting Project:

brown craft, construction, or paper bag paper at least 9"x12".

assorted found tools for making dots (example: pen caps, pencil erasers, opposite end of a paint brush)

5. Art of Mexico: Weaving Tribal Patterns Project:

heavy cardboard (to construct loom)

assortment of yarn, cord ribbon, raffia, fabric strips, and other fibers suitable for weaving

6. Japanese Print Making Project:
